in reply to: Accommodation recommendations please #7161
The bike looked like it had been parked under a bird's nest for too long, it also sported an impressive looking insect collection in the oil cooler. I am not sure what we'll be up to on Sunday, otherwise I would say drop in on your way home. If the weather is miserable on Sunday we will be home and you should come in for a cup of coffee or a beer :-).
in reply to: Accommodation recommendations please #7159I suppose you'll want something on the way North? Otherwise there is a nice Motel at Kariotahi Beach, that's past Waiuku. I saw a really rugged looking R1150GS at Experience, looked like it hadn't been clean since new. Was that yours?
in reply to: What are they doing to the 1200GS???? #7024Cool find Malcolm. Garry the Graffity artistĀ š
in reply to: Abandoned weatherboard buildings -Post them here- #5133Very clever, wreck them before they're too old. Funny how the stuff they usually replace it with is ugly as sin and doesn't deserve to exist half as long as the building it replaces. I hope someone has put the timber to good use.
Those splines are expensive to repair. I would suggest that you get a quote from a BMW workshop. He has no way of knowing how bad the splines are. When they let go the bike has no more drive and you'll need a trailer.Ā Once you've bought it the splines should not cause him any more hassles. If the the bike came from the UK the speedo should be in miles. Can you be sure that the 41000km is accurate? If the price of the bike has the cost of potential repairs factored in it may still be a good deal, especially if nothing goes wrong for a while. However, the history of the bike seems to be a bit murky, make sure you have it checked by someone who knows them.
Condition is what counts. Are those miles or kilometres? It's only just run in at 41000km. Do your own service and you'll find it cheap to run. I've just replaced my front brake pads, and they are expensive. Have a look what they're like on the bike and how old they are. If they're the first set I would consider replacing them. Is it making any funny noises in neutral that go away when you pull in the clutch?Otherwise it's a neat bike and you should have a lot of fun with it. Has it got pannier?Cheers,Alex
Welcome to the forum. I don't know of any specific problems with the R1100RS, of courses this doesn't mean they don;t exist. Remember they bike is now approaching 13 year of age, and as you may know teenagers can be problematicĀ :-D.Ā If I remember correctly this was the first year of the new engine, they have made subtle improvements over time. For this reason it is usually better to go for the latest model you can afford. Problems that do creep up are, leaking final drives, worn clutch splines and I suppose the odd one with ABS probelms.Ā It very much depends on how well the bike has been looked after. I am sure others will chime in who have actually owned one of the earlier bikes. Cheers,Alex
I"what was the best thing just before "sliced bread". She just laughed and said I don't know.I have discussed this question with some fellow engineers were I work Air NZ and we believe the technology for mechanically slicing bread before being sold by the local baker may only have been around for approx 85 years! Can anyone help me with the answer????Hey Tharon you won't regret buying one of these tools.CheersĀ Andrew
If sliced bread has beenaround for this long, the previous thing must have been fixed wing aircraft, then various motorcycles and motor carriages, the petrol engine and any number of other things. I've never understood the fixation with sliced bread myself :-).

in reply to: What optional xtras are essential? #7079Bugger.This is all adding up!! šThose of you that may have bought from new, did you get many options thrown in. If i am paying nearly full asking price surely they must be able to chuck in a chrome exhaust or such like? Thanks all the same.
Well, you can always ask. When I bought my GS it was last years model and the 1200GS was knocking on the door. I paid full list price, but got a great trade-in and a deal on some accessories. Of course the dealer had no idea that a 1200GS was about to come out :-).
in reply to: Moving down South. #7096All the best Tharon, I hope you'll enjoy Dunedin. I've never been there myself. Maybe I'll get to see it on our trip to the annual rally.Cheers,Alex
