I am tenatively planning a visit to Nelson area in 2006. I know winter is approaching. Do alot of folks still ride this time of year? I live in Maine in the states. With electrics I still ride with a Finnish fellow. I would love to ride NZ no matter what the weather. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks and G’Day.

We’re now coming into late spring, and the riding is pretty good, anywhere you can see through the bloody rain!
You can ride in all seasons in the South Island, but you do have to be very respectful of weather and road conditions on the day. Our climate is highly unpredictable, and conditions in the high country, particularly the mountain passes, can turn savage very quickly. (As a foreigner from the North Island I tend to seek out local wisdom before venturing on a ride in the South Island if I am not sure about weather - and have nearly come to grief on the Lindis Pass with exposure on New Years Day, than which you don't get much more midsummer)
As a foreigner from the North Island, I gotta say the South Island is magnificent for the eyeballs from Mid-March to Mid-October - but can be cold.

At least when it is cold there are no bugs. And as far as rain goes, I have had my share in the last two weeks here. I rode almost five hours on my way home the RA Rally in Tenn last week. That is when a good rain suit, fresh Rain X on the face shield and new tires[well scuffed, though] come in handy. Thanks for the info. Are there many register members on the South Island? Ride safe and enjoy the warmth!!

Yes a good rainsuit is a must. We have April weather all year around. If you don’t like the weather, wait for five minutes. The weater tends to be most settled from late January to early April.

Yes, there are plenty of register members on the South Island. Don't know how many read this forum though. Club members enjoy the use of our tour guide booklet. I think MOA has something similar.

I have tried to join the Owners Register online, but I guess it still isn’t available. It would be great to have a list of members, such as MOA does. Theirs is an anonymous list, where the Airheads just use first names and towns.

I haven’t checked to see if the online membership form is posting correctly, I guess our administrators will know the answer to that, but the .pdf file version downloads OK.
I know it's now becoming archaic, but snail mail still works: print off the form and send it with some of those genuine US dollars, not our funny-money stuff.
I'm absolutely positive you will be able to jack up plenty of local company, advice, and hospitality via email before undertaking your odyssey. I'm equally sure the Register would welcome you, too.

That online membership set up is on hold due to a shortage of static IP addressed in NZ. At least that’s what I’ve been told. As soon as we get one it’s all go, unless of course the new comittee decides otherwise.
