:-D, must check the profiles more often. You'll love the bike. Get yourself some basic tools so you can service it yourself. It's well worth the savings.I like the new avatar. Duck with attitude.

I would suggest Port Waikato to Te Akau warf. You could include Klondyke road. Pick a fine day, the scenery is stunning. Oh, might pay to put on some TKC80 if you are planning to do more of this.

How is your quest for the 1150 going?

Looks, good. When are the training wheels coming off? 😀Danny Crane has been talking about building a sidecar for a GS. This one looks really good. It would be great for carrying all the beer, I am mean gear, on that HUB ride.

I just did the annual service on the 1150 and fitted SS brake lines. Changed the clutch fluid as well. Took me about three hours all up, but my time was free :-). I actually enjoyed working on the bike. I also got to try out my Teng torque wrench :-). The 60000 will be done in a couple of weeks, a bit early but I'll have time then.

have you got the "low vehicle volume modification cert " for your next warrant of fitness. Ya just can't go around chucking stuff on your bike that makes it unsafe for other road users. I shall ring the testing station and inform them what you have done. safe motoring

Ze brake line speek german, zat should be enuff.

Did you have a ride on one? Did you really like it?  It's heavy. The weight is a problem off-road.  Did the bike you are looking at have its 40000km service? Does it have any leaks? Is there any play in the real wheel? Does it have ABS? Does the starter motor make any unusual noises?I am not a good person to ask about these bikes, because I really like my 1150. I have had no mechanical issues outside of normal wear. I ride my bike hard and have taken it places that it probably shouldn't have gone. It has been dropped more than once, put has always been picked up. It is not the ideal bike for a ride like the CCA, but it can be done. It is a very versatile bike, great two up, rides well on gravel, can give Cagivas a run for their money and last but not least, it is quite robust. If you like it, the bike is ok and the numbers stack up for you, I'd go for it.Post pictures.Cheers,Alex

I thought I'd warm this topic up, because I've recently had a warrant of fitness done and the  man at VINZ commented on how nice the BMW stock stainless steel brake lines on my bike are. They are on to it.

Washed my bike today... still covered in clay and grass from the CCA ... and discovered the cost of dropping it in those clay and rock infested challenge sections... a string of nasty gouges on the rocker cover (rhs where crash bar is a little less protective)... can these be refinished by a good bike painter or is the coating some supertechbmw  stuff? ....anyone?

I would use a bit of filler and get a rattle can made up with matching paint, that should do the trick. The I "would part" is not entirely correct, because so far I have not been motivated enough to do anything about my own covers. I even have a second set that I could do up and change over. Experience sends them out to a spray painter to get them done. I had used the 1150 on the last CCA, dropped it four times, but only once while I was moving at any speed. They had 24 water crossings last time and I got a bit too cocky on one of them. The R80GS was much easier to ride and apart from leaning against a gorse bush(not falling over :-D) I got through without any trouble. It's the low first gear that makes all the difference. I think the bike weighs almost as much as a 1200 at 208kg.

Enjoy it while you have it, I am sure you can put up with the discomfort for a few days.

Yesterday was my first try of the ASC on my new 08 dventure. Well things did not go well; the red lights came on and that was it. No ASC no ASB no speedo. I Get a phone call form Experience today. Looks like it is a very expensive major component has gone and they have to get approval from BMW to fix the bike 😕 Once they get approval it will be 2 weeks before the parts will arrive. 😥Now I have a very black 08 k1200s in the garage.  🙄

That's what worries me about having a bike loaded up with  electronics, they can go wrong. If you haven't got it, it can't break. BMW has done the same with their cars, or should I say the bikes have followed the cars, and have been loaded up with electronics. While I believe that modern engine management technology is necessary to increase performance while keeping emissions and consumption down, in a lot of other instances it leads to unnecessary complications. As your bike gets older these components will suffer and the their replacement cost will be ridiculously expensive compared to the residual value of your bike. Of course for that to matter you'd have to keep your bike for more than a few months. How are you finding the K1200S? Is that the one that has a bit of experience?

Sorry to hear that, that's is a real bummer. It does sound a bit like the splines to me. How many K's has your bike done? Hope it turns out to be affordable. It was a nice story though. The trouble with these forums is that bike problems seem to play a prominent role. Knock on wood, my 1150 has been good during the last 85000km, all I am getting is normal wear and tear. I will keep riding it until the wheels fall off (not literally I hope).

If I recall correctly, when I had a throttle body on my 1100S replaced under warranty cos it developed excessive play, the cost of the new body was only 70 pounds (less than $200) I was very surprised!

That's good to know. Perhaps I'll practice deferred maintenance in this case.
