1. learn to quote properly2. you had to have been there3. I am actually not quite sure what you are trying to say. 😀
in reply to: Enforcement wish list #10528And is the driving any better in Germany ? Regards Phil
I'd have to say yes it is, by a margin and I am not just talking about how people handle their cars at speed. I have no idea how the accident figures compare, that would be interesting. The population density is much higher, which gives you more opportunity to get it wrong. The really sad part is that motorcycling is a seasonal activity, with considerable carnage at the start of the season.
in reply to: Enforcement wish list #10524That's what happened in Germany. They've set up a good driver training system. Then drivers got completely carried away and they had to build the Autobahns to compensate.
so when u attending 👿I see, my sarcasm and attempt at satire got completely misinterpreted.
in reply to: Enforcement wish list #10521Stop at stop signs, don't crash red or orange lights, drive appropriately in lanes, indicate, give way when you are supposed to, wear a seatbelt and don't speed through intersections, and you'll probably never even know we're there.
I reckon that if I fail to see a police car, I'd have all sorts of other problems. Nearly got hit by a van today, whose driver decided that he did not want to continue to wait in line, but would rather pull out into the bus lane. Without looking or indicating, of course. There was no way to stop, but I was able to toot while swerving. I keep my finger near the horn an give myself a bit of room to maneuver, but often it just comes down to a gut feeling that something is not quite right. Too bad I was not driving a bus :-).I really can't see how driver training would entice people to drive irresponsibly. In Germany you are now paying $3-4000 for a drivers license. You learn the theory in around 10 hours. You have to drive in town, in the country on the autobahn, and at night, once you have learned the basics. Then you can take the test. If they don't see you adjusting the controls before you start, checking the mirror and or looking over your shoulder, prior to slowing down, indicating or any other maneuver that requires awareness, you are out of luck. If you go too fast or too slow you miss out. If you can't hill start, three point turn or parallel park you get to have another go some other time, for a small fee of course. If they are not confident that you can safely drive you will not get your license.Did I mention you have to be 18 before you can get your license? You do however get a full license immediately, at least you did when I got mine and it is a real lifetime license. Do something stupid, and they might ask you to take a psychological assessment, before you get your license back . Just to see if you are still mentally fit enough to drive again. Once you've paid that much you tend to want to keep your license. They are quite happy to let you stick to public transport for the rest of your life. Of course they know where you live, so they don't need to chase you. It is compulsory to advise the council of any change of address. Of course people still manage to stuff up. A lot of people are impatient and pass at inappropriate times. With their traffic volume, you don't get many second chances. Generally though people seem to be more disciplined in their driving and take it seriously. They make an effort to anticipate problems. Merging usually happens well before a bottle neck. Passing on the inside is illegal. In short, I think decent driver training is a brilliant idea.
in reply to: Enforcement wish list #10515How about this... no demerits ... no fines ... just compulsory training from a registered person following an offence... competency based test following the training and license returned ... result ... a hell of alot better drivers and safer roads ... only downside ... total cut off of revenue stream to wellington (boohoo)
Training Training!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No if you train Divers/riders. They will only think they are "Good drivers/riders, so will only go faster. So the " Land Transport" would have us believe. 👿 Regards Phil
That's what happened in Germany. They've set up a good driver training system. Then drivers got completely carried away and they had to build the Autobahns to compensate. Thankfully the opening of the European borders put as stop to that and diluted the presence of trained drivers. Now it is a lot safer on the roads. Polish truck drivers with worn brakes know their limits and make sure no accidents happen.
in reply to: Suspension set up R1150GS #10571A brand new one :-D. My Elka shocks arrived last Wednesday and were installed Thursday evening. After the weekend's ride in the rain I can say that I am very happy with them. They were built specially for my weight and riding preferences and are adjustable for compression and rebound. The rear has the remote preload adjustment and front and rear have external reservoirs. The front shock has dual springs. So far I have not made any changes, as they seem fine the way they are. They are quite a step up from the stock shocks and I am pleased that I've bought them. It's a new lease of live for the bike. The stock shocks were on medium preload on the front, on standard on the rear. I think the bikes are set up for a rider weighing about 75-80kg, I am only slightly above that. The stock shocks start to fade fairly soon, but as it is a gradual process, by the time you notice they are pretty much stuffed. They can't be rebuilt without major surgery. Even the good shocks need a service every 20-30000km. I'll probably stretch that out to every 2 years.
in reply to: Hot tips wanted for R1150R exhaust #10548A Y-pipe will improve the sound, as most of the muffling seems to happen in the collector box. A straight through pipe will also sound a bit better. Take the muffler off and listen to it then, it's louder but not unpleasantly so. If there is an easy way to clean out the muffler I'd also like to know about it. I just can't get myself to spend any money on something that's not broken and will not bring a tangible performance improvement. If you are not attached to the cat for environmental reasons it would probably be the best option, as it appears that aftermarket pipes will be frowned on soon.
in reply to: Enforcement wish list #10507Unfortunately this is all wishful thinking, as there would never be 7 cops, 2 patrol cars, 3 patrol motorbikes and a brief to target intersection driving offences, at least not in Auckland.
in reply to: Enforcement wish list #10504I don't like:Red light runners (Very much including cyclists and buses) Failing to indicate, while pulling into traffic, turning or changing lanes.Moving into the turning lane without indicating and the indicating just before the actual turn.People racing up the inside lane and then pushing in, because their lane is blocked (which they could see well in advance). Not giving waySuddenly swerving into the other lane because their own lane is blocked (without checking for other vehicles). The guy who drives while using two cellphones at once, something did suffer and it wasn't his phone call.At the end of the day, it's red light runners that piss me off the most. They scare me more than a guy doing 65 in a 50 zone. Actually, it would be a hell of a lot cheaper stopping these guys with a decent driving test.
in reply to: Great Motorcycle Books #8391This one has been recommended by the author himself. It looks to be a good book, if you are interested in riding Southern Africa.http://www.flatroadsandtwisties.com/page2.html
in reply to: Lower suspension #10499a bit like the 140kph restriction with the panniers on, fast enough for the Autoban but not enough for the backroads. I can say they are no problem at 190kph! 🙄
You must have a long private road to your apartment 😮
in reply to: R80GS high fuel consumption #9718The R80 now runs on sub 6L/100km. Considering that this is on almost full on off-road tyres I am very happy with it. The 1150 with more weight and more power does around 5.5 liters in touring mode.

in reply to: R1150gs clock reset #10484Have you cleaned the terminals properly? I've used a small file on mine. They should be greased with something like Vaseline as well.
