in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10870
There are a few side tracks, it's an old logging road after all. None of them lead back out though. There is also an option called Fisher track. It's in the area, but I am not sure where it begins.Reofix, would be good to have you along. We'll help to push your bike 😀
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10867here is part two of the video cliphttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7fy_UipnnU&feature=relatedThe water crossings will be the most interesting bit. This is where it pays to have a bit of manpower around.
in reply to: New Business Opportunity #10806Sad innit?
Maybe, but it's highly entertaining. I am so motivated, I might wash my bike soon. Maybe it's not black after all.
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10865Seeing that it is during the term break I could do Friday. It's unlikely that you would make it back by Sunday 11am. You could look at a DRZ400, they are excellent bikes and can be had for a reasonable price. The 250 is fine on gravel roads, but will struggle on the open road. We'll keep the planning flexible, depending on the weather. For the 42nd traverse I'd like to have three people in the group. If anyone else is keen, but not keen enough for the traverse, let us know anyway. Here is a link to a youtube video to give you an idea of what it's like.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M49qdSx60II
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10862You could have at least put some lipstick on, Steve.
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10859I have just realized that I'll be working on the 27th. October 4 & 5 is the only possibility. We will only proceed if the weather is favourable. The idea is to keep any risk to a minimum while having as much fun as possible.
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10857Hi Alex, I'm interested. The weekend doesn't work for me at the moment. It looks like you don't have much in the way of replies at the moment. If it doesn't come together for those dates are you good for a little later. I'm assuming it conincides with school hols. The two questions I have is how hard is the track and how cold will it be. Used to have friends living in the big T, Owhango and National Park and still remember how cold it gets in there.Give me a call and lets see what comes of it.Cheers - Des.
Des the track is difficult and it could be cold. But the degree of difficulty will keep the cold away. It shouldn't take more than 2 hours to get through, unless there is a lot of picking up of bikes or getting stuck in places, even then you wouldn't feel the cold.I am considering Stephen's option as well. The scenery down there is spectacular. The 42nd traverse will be around for a while yet.
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10856Hi Alex - I began to do this ride on my DR350 during the first weekend in March this year but pulled the pin as the weather was atrocious. I managed to do Fishers Track however and would consider taking my 1150 on that track going downhill from National Park to Reteruke on the weekend of the TTTTT (young1's ride to the Taranaki Tunnels & Whangamomona on the weekend of 25/26 Sept.)Would be great to see other BMWOR members who enjoy getting their GS's dirty on this ride.http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=79701cheers Stephen O aka Aslan 🙂
Hi Stephen, the weekend is on the 27th and 28th. My daughter has her graduation on the 25th, so I couldn't go then any way. The 27th may be possible, so I'll think about it. Cheers,Alex
in reply to: Abandoned weatherboard buildings -Post them here- #5282I really like the overgrown one. It keeps me motivated to mow my lawn every now and then.
in reply to: New Business Opportunity #10801You might be on to something here. The 42nd traverse idea is certainly not getting any bites.
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10853and ifs been raining u will need the daylight savings. there was quite a bit of slippery stuff at the beginning. as u get to middle section a very nasty bog hole by the river crossing and a very steep part. there may be alternates around them. ya may as well look a fishers track while ya down there. re thopsons track track deam with ya. i did it the first day i bought my GS, was very interesting
If it's wet I'll give it a miss. It's very likely that bikes will be dropped occasionally, so if 3-4 people were keen it would be ideal. There are plenty of alternative rides in this area, so there is no need to be pig headed about the whole thing. It would be relatively easy on 250's, but it will be a challenge on real adventure bikes.
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10850done it on a mountain bike. good luck u will need it. also do thompsons track from tearoha to katikati
Sounds like you're not interested. A friend has done the 42nd on a KTM 950 with luggage and dual sport tyres and he is a bit on the short side. I figure I'll be ok on the R80. But as I've said, I won't do it alone.
in reply to: Does anybody know…… #10843Darryl owns it. He is also on this board. It was advertised on trademe by the previous owner. Darryl must have bought it hoping he could make a few dollars on a resale. It looks to be in good condition and the current price seems to be in the ball park. The fact that it's not purple is also an advantage :-D. When you buy an old bike there is always money to be spent, keep that in mind.
in reply to: Speedo accuracy #10565Lucky then, that we didn't go fast then :-D. My speedo is miles out. I never speed, yet it shows all sorts of weird numbers. Maybe I should get a GPS.I think the GPS error was removed a few years ago. I was told that it used to be a couple of hundred meters out, but now it's pretty much spot on.
in reply to: So… Have you seen it? #10793Saw the 450 the other day and it looked quite good, although I can't see the rubber bung over the petrol filler lasting long and the side stand snaps up like a gin trap as soon as a little weight is taken off the bike which could lead to a lot of cussing and swearing and stationary drops as it takes people unawares. 😳
I think the idea is that you can pretty much ride off the side stand after you've dropped it in a tricky situation without having to do any acrobatics to fold it up. The R80 has a snap-up side stand, you get used to it. People forget it's a performance bike and not little commuter.I sat on it yesterday. I was surprised that I could get both balls of my feet down. Someone who's not been skipping lunches, or has longer legs should be quite comfortable. It seems hardly worth to get a registration for, there is no way you're going to ride this thing for any distance on the road.
