Bonneville Salt Flats Records for K1200S/R
The last-minute “unofficial efforts for the K 1200 S and the K 1200 R to achieve FIM world records at the Bonneville Salt Flat last week have proven successful. All times were for stock bikes.
K 1200 S
Sponsored by BMW of San Francisco
Ridden by Andy Sills (world record holder, streamlined motorcycle 80cc and 100cc classes)
FIM Worldwide Record
1300 cc class/partially streamlined/naturally aspirated/stock motorcycle
One up: 173mph average (top at 178mph)
Two up: 168mph average
This was achieved with almost no modification. With changes in gears and particularly in engine management, at least 200mph+ could easily be achieved. With the addition of Nitrous (allowed under the rules) at least 250hp could be secured and the AMA record of 259mph set by the Hayabusa could be beaten: this according to the FIM officials at the scene.
The highlight of the entire race week was the two-up speed pass on the K 1200 S with Andy Sills and a female passenger which at just 5mph less than riding one-up completely blew away the crowd and other competitors.
This record has been witnessed and certified by FIM officials but cannot be announced as a “done deal until the FIM board meets in about two months time.
K 1200 R PowerCup
Sponsored by San Jose BMW
Ridden by Brian Parriott (first time at Bonneville or on salt or sand, for that matter)
AMA (U.S.) Record (worldwide FIM record couldn’t be secured yet due to late registration)
1300 cc class/non-streamlined/naturally aspirated stock motorcycle
One up: 162mph average (top at 167mph)
Like the K 1200 S, this was done at the last minute and with even less modification. It is very likely that this record could easily be bettered next year.
